Pill mill charges dropped after investigators embarrass themselves
As Florida’s statewide crackdown on pill mills continues, authorities have been forced in recent weeks to deal with a pair of public embarrassments due to misconduct by investigators.
In November, prosecutors had to drop a case against a Winter Park doctor accused of writing fraudulent prescriptions when it was revealed that a state trooper had been involved in an extramarital affair with a key witness.
The second incident involved four Orlando-area law enforcement officers who are alleged to have conspired to illegally search a storage unit where they believed drugs were being stored. All four now face misdemeanor charges, and any evidence they may have uncovered will almost certainly be worthless.
Defending against drug charges is hard enough even when cops play by the rules. But when they conduct illegal searches or have inappropriate relationships with witnesses, getting a fair hearing may be challenging. When the deck is stacked against you, you need the protection afforded by an experienced criminal defense attorney who knows how to dig deep, uncover hidden facts, and stand up to abuses of authority.
